Wofford College, Burwell Dining Hall

Wofford College’s Burwell Dining Hall was renovated and expanded to encourage student engagement and improve their dining experience. The 7,000 SF, two-story dining hall now features 150 more seats, private dining and meeting rooms, and a diverse range of food stations and open kitchens so students can view the food preparation process.

I’ve talked with a number of people who saw Burwell during its early days and who have spent time in Burwell now, and they almost can’t believe it’s the same building.”
– Nayef Samhat, Wofford President

A new entrance and internal staircase connecting the two dining levels with floor-to-ceiling windows provide plenty of natural lighting. Energy-efficient systems also align with Wofford College’s commitment to creating an environmentally responsible campus.

Phasing Plan Keeps Burwell Dining Hall Operational During Contruction

One of the significant challenges of the renovation was keeping the Burwell Dining Hall operational throughout construction. To accomplish this, the project was executed in two phases. The first phase involved renovating the lower level while food service operations continued on the upper level. In the second phase, the upper level and new front addition were completed, with food service shifting to the newly renovated lower level. This strategic approach ensured minimal disruption to daily campus life.
