Columbus Culture
The Iron Mistress
The Columbus Studio opened in 1960 as Hecht Burdeshaw Architects (HBA). In 2025, HBA became part of the McMillan Pazdan Smith team. Today, our studio operates from the historic Riverfront Building once occupied by the Seaboard Air Line Freight Depot. It was constructed in 1902 by the Seaboard Air Line Railway to serve the industries, cotton warehouses, and commercial operations along Front Avenue. Prior to the Riverfront move, HBA was located in the historic Iron Mistress Building (from 1985-2025), formerly the Bank of Columbus originally constructed in the 1860s. Columbus, Georgia, enjoys a rich architectural heritage, reflected in the enduring spirit and resilience of its historic spaces adapted for contemporary use in Uptown Columbus.
