North Huntsville Library and Park, Madison County Public Library
North Huntsville Public Library and Park began with the challenge of transforming an aging former private school into an inviting community destination for learning, recreation, and connection. The existing building offered valuable space but low ceilings, limited natural light, accessibility deficiencies, and compartmentalized interiors restricted the potential of the existing building. The adaptive reuse project addressed these limitations while preserving the structure and maximizing the community’s investment.
Converting a 1970s School into a Modern Library
Portions of the structural system were reconfigured so large sections of interior masonry walls could be removed. Open, flexible spaces now improve visibility, circulation, wayfinding, and security throughout the library.
Additions to the existing building expanded the facility and introduced extensive glazing that brings daylight deeper into the building. The library includes dedicated children’s areas, a maker space, learning centers, study rooms, collection areas, staff offices, and spaces for educational and community programming. A large multipurpose room has a separate entrance to accommodate events that take place outside regular library hours. A new elevator and other improvements increase accessibility and meet current life safety and building code requirements.
The project extended outside of the building to the surrounding 6.5-acre site that was transformed into a community park. Renovated recreational facilities, playgrounds, pickleball courts, covered pavilions, walking trails, and outdoor gathering areas offer new opportunities for activity and connection in North Huntsville.
