Discovery Life Sciences Headquarters, HudsonAlpha Institute of Biotechnology

Discovery Life Sciences needed a global headquarters capable of supporting complex biospecimen processing, molecular research and genomic sequencing while encouraging collaboration across its growing team. Located on the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology campus in Huntsville, Alabama, the new 93,000 SF facility brings advanced laboratory operations, data analytics and workplace amenities together in a purpose-built research environment.

As the custodian of the world’s largest biospecimen inventory, Discovery Life Sciences provides biological samples and associated clinical data to researchers developing new diagnostics, therapeutics and personalized medicine approaches. The headquarters strengthens the company’s ability to support scientific research across oncology, immunology, infectious diseases and other disciplines.

Advanced Laboratories for Biospecimen Research and Testing

The facility provides the technology and infrastructure required to receive, handle and process an extensive range of biological specimens. Molecular biology laboratories support DNA and RNA extraction, PCR amplification and other testing used in genomics, transcriptomics and proteomics research.

Also, a genomic sequencing suite enables high-throughput sequencing of DNA and RNA samples. Integrating biospecimen processing, molecular testing, sequencing and data analytics into one facility improves workflows and accelerates the delivery of critical research materials and information.

Collaborative Workspaces on the HudsonAlpha Campus

Beyond its specialized laboratories, Discovery Life Sciences headquarters includes offices, cafés and break areas where researchers, scientists and support staff can meet and exchange ideas. Breaking Down the Scale of a 93,000 SF Building

One of the primary design challenges was reducing the perceived mass of the large, single-story building. Interlocking compositions of curtainwall and metal panels divide the exterior into distinct forms while expressing elements of the internal program. Subtle shifts in the glass color add depth and visual variation across the façade. The arrival sequence creates a deliberate transition into the research headquarters. A prominent cantilever defines the entrance, followed by a more compressed vestibule that gradually opens into a high-volume lobby.
