South Huntsville Public Library, Huntsville-Madison County Public Library

South Huntsville Public Library expands the traditional library experience into a vibrant destination for learning, creativity, and community life. Located within the Sandra Moon Complex on the former Grissom High School campus, the approximately 36,000 SF facility brings together resources and activities for visitors of every age.

Balancing Learning, Activity, Collaboration, and Comfort

Traditional collections and reading areas are complemented by a public technology hub, maker space, classrooms, meeting rooms, gallery space, adult education and arts programming, a café and coffee house, and mechanized book sorting. The library design organizes spaces according to age group, activity, and noise level while maintaining clear sightlines for library staff.

Dedicated areas for children and teens give younger visitors spaces designed around their interests and needs.

The children’s area extends into a gated garden and features imaginative elements, including a launch-ready rocket and a puppet theater “gantry.” These playful additions bring a sense of wonder to the library experience.

Interior windows create visual connections throughout the building while separating quiet reading areas from active learning, technology, and gathering spaces. This approach supports safety and supervision without sacrificing the library’s open, welcoming character.

Abundant exterior windows fill the building with natural light. Laminated wood beams and an exposed wood roof deck add warmth and visual interest to the brick- and EIFS-clad facility.

Designed to Change with the Community

Flexible planning allows rooms and shared areas to accommodate changing programs, events, and technologies. A varied furniture collection gives visitors options for reading, working, collaborating, and relaxing. Adaptable electrical connections support different room arrangements and make it easier for the library to respond to future needs.

After nearly a decade of community planning and fundraising, the South Huntsville Public Library is centered on connection, exploration, and lifelong learning.
