North Carolina State University, Jordan Hall
The renovation of Jordan Hall at North Carolina State University has transformed a previously cramped and underutilized satellite library into an open, vibrant 6,800-square-foot learning commons for the College of Natural Resources. By removing walls and reconfiguring the space, the renovation creates an environment where students, faculty, and staff can gather, study, and collaborate.
The new design includes a mix of seating areas, dual library and food kiosks, and vertical wood slat detailing, with a wood ceiling and a palette of blues and greens that subtly evoke the natural elements of forests, water, and sky.
Unlike the previous design, which limited natural light access, the new layout ensures that 100% of the occupied space benefits from natural light, creating a more welcoming and energy-efficient environment.
Accessibility and Collaboration Make Jordan Hall a Success
Addressing the need for food service in this remote part of campus, the renovation includes a coffee shop, making the learning commons a destination venue for the many earth sciences departments housed in the six-story building. The addition of this amenity, along with accessible and flexible study spaces enhance the area’s usability and appeal.
The renovation was a highly collaborative effort, with input from more than 20 stakeholders, including department heads, deans, food service staff, librarians, and student representatives. This inclusive approach ensured that the needs of all users were met, resulting in a multi-functional space that serves the entire campus community.
Optimizing Space for Modern Needs
The project also involved relocating a significant portion of the library’s book collection to the university’s “book-bot” on Centennial Campus. This move freed up valuable space within Jordan Hall, allowing for the creation of more collaboration and study areas. The remaining collection and circulation desk are now housed in a secure, open, and flexible core, eliminating physical barriers and enhancing the overall functionality of the space.
This renovation not only revitalizes the library but also redefines the role of Jordan Hall as a central, accessible, and vibrant area for learning and collaboration at NC State University.
