Jackson County Animal Rescue Center
The Jackson County Animal Rescue Center is designed to serve as both a rescue center and a gathering space for the community. Located in Sylva, NC, the 14,000-square-foot center doubles the capacity of the previous shelter, offering 30 cat units and over 35 indoor-outdoor dog units. The center also features multipurpose space to host community events and promote pet adoptions in Jackson County.
Sustainable Design Features at Jackson County Animal Rescue
Situated within the Green Energy Park, the center utilizes methane gas from a nearby closed landfill for heating and hot water. This integration with the park’s sustainable energy initiatives underscores the center’s commitment to environmental stewardship and animal welfare. Additionally, the project improved Green Energy Park in several ways, such as new public restrooms, storage facilities, enhanced parking, and walking trails, seamlessly connecting the rescue center with the park’s offerings. The design team also addressed specific challenges, such as drainage issues, by raising the floors in the kennels, ensuring a safe and functional space.
Collaboration with Local Community Groups
This project, led and funded by Jackson County, was a collaborative effort involving shelter staff, County Health Department officials, and local animal rescue non-profits, who have offices within the center. The design team worked closely with these stakeholders to ensure the facility meets their needs and provides a healthy, humane environment for animals.
