City of Greenville, Public Safety Headquarters
The City of Greenville Public Safety Headquarters is an adaptive reuse project that transformed a vacant 126,000 SF, six-story office building into a consolidated headquarters for police, fire, municipal courts, emergency operations, traffic management, engineering, and permitting services. The project converted former corporate offices and cubicle space into a secure, coordinated environment serving multiple city departments.
Organizing Complex Public Safety Operations Under One Roof
Working closely with city leaders and public safety departments, the design team programmed each floor around distinct operational and security requirements. The basement houses holding cells, a secure sallyport, file storage, and police equipment. Courtrooms and a jury room occupy the first floor, while the second floor includes an EOC (Emergency Operations Center) and offices for city services. The fire department, traffic management, city engineering, police headquarters, and dispatch occupy the remainder of the building.
Balancing Security, Access, and Workplace Quality
The new addition of a two-story, glass entrance and lobby gives the existing office building a stronger, civic identity and creates a secure vestibule for screening courthouse visitors. Throughout the public safety headquarters, the design balances controlled access and departmental security with access to daylight, creating more comfortable working environments for public safety personnel and other city employees.
