Maple Crest Apartments at Lee Walker
Maple Crest Apartments addresses Asheville Housing Authority’s need to replace an aging public housing neighborhood with modern homes that better serve residents and reconnect the site to the surrounding city. The property sat on a steeply elevated area that limited visibility, access, and opportunities to integrate with the fabric of downtown Asheville.
Transforming a Former Public Housing into a Connected, Mixed-Income Community
Working with Mountain Housing Opportunities, the Asheville Housing Authority, and David Baker Architects, the team created a master plan for a mixed-income community centered around courtyards, walkable paths, and shared green spaces.
To strengthen neighborhood connection, the site was lowered by 10 feet and redesigned with two new entrances. These changes opened direct views to downtown Asheville and made the community more accessible and welcoming from surrounding streets.
Maple Crest Apartments advanced successfully through Asheville’s conditional zoning process, which included community meetings, planning reviews, and approvals from commissions and City Council.
