Huntsville Transit Transfer Station
The Huntsville Transit Transfer Station serves as the central hub for every transit line in the city, simplifying transfers, improving accessibility, and supporting the daily movement of buses and passengers. The design protects passengers from the elements, manages stormwater across an expansive paved site, and withstands the demands of continuous bus traffic.
Integrating Passenger Comfort, Accessibility, and Stormwater Management
The 50,364 SF transit station brings 14 bus bays together with a ticketing lobby, passenger waiting areas, driver amenities, and infrastructure for managing routes and operations. Additionally, an ADA-accessible lobby provides a direct connection to the bus platform, while a soaring entry tower establishes the station as a recognizable civic landmark.
A 450-foot cantilevered canopy shelters the bus bays and gives the facility its defining architectural expression. Inspired by wings in flight, its angled structure conveys the speed and efficiency of modern transportation. The inverted canopy directs rainwater away from buses and drive aisles into a central rain garden aligned with the ticketing office. In addition to managing runoff and promoting groundwater recharge, the landscaped area creates a more inviting environment for waiting passengers.
Durable, Efficient Materials for Long-Term Performance
Materials for the transit station were selected for performance as well as appearance. For example, heavy-duty concrete paving provides the stability and durability needed for bus traffic and exposure to fuel and oil. Scored concrete sidewalks reinforce the canopy’s angled structural pattern. At the ticketing building, ground-face masonry provides a durable, cost-conscious exterior finish. White coatings on the canopy structure and roof reflect sunlight, helping reduce heat buildup across the platform.
Our customers value operational efficiency, but their safety is also critical. The new station really accentuates those priorities. We hope our current and future riders embrace it, and we thank the Federal Transit Authority for making it possible.
