Gritters Library, Cobb County Public Library
The Gritters Library in Marietta, Georgia redefines the role of a public library. Delivered through a design-build partnership with Batson Cook, the project replaces an outdated and undersized building with a welcoming, flexible, and accessible space designed to meet the growing and diverse needs of Northeast Cobb County.
Located adjacent to Shaw Park and surrounded by a wooded landscape, the 15,000 SF library connects indoor and outdoor experiences through expansive windows and a public balcony with views of the forest. The building’s simple, modern form features metal siding and large openings for natural light, creating a bright and inviting atmosphere. Contrasting interior finishes and thoughtfully designed entrances provide clear wayfinding and a dynamic user experience.
More Than Books: A Hub for Workforce Development + Lifelong Learning
More than a place to borrow books, the new Gritters Library is a hub for workforce development, lifelong learning, and community engagement. A key feature of the building is a dedicated 3,700 SF space operated by the County Parks System for community use, along with classrooms and flexible meeting rooms designed to support partnerships with CobbWorks and other local organizations. These spaces will host job readiness programs, training workshops, and educational events for all ages.
To better serve a diverse user base, the library also includes a children’s area and program room, group study rooms for collaboration, and expanded reading and self-service areas.
The new Gritters Library reflects the neighborhood’s deep appreciation for its history while embracing the future. Since its original opening in 1973, the library has been a cornerstone of the community. This new chapter allows it to continue being a place of learning, support, and connection for generations to come.
