Decatur Fire Station No. 5
Decatur Fire Station No. 5 in Alabama is an 8,729 SF fire station designed to meet the City of Decatur’s operational needs. The facility replaces a station that served the area for more than 60 years, providing a new facility with functionality, durability, safety and aesthetics aligned with the proposed budget.
Designed to Reduce Response Times and Improve Firefighter Wellbeing
The site layout, building orientation, and apparatus access shorten turnout times and enable rapid deployment of emergency vehicles. The two drive-through apparatus bays with 17-foot-high, four-fold bay doors are programmed to open automatically when emergency alerts sound, allowing for a quick exit. An active ventilation system with NO₂ sensors improves air quality within the bay. The design integrates technology to support the City’s current needs and adapt to future demands.
Decatur Fire Station No. 5 includes 12 individual bunkrooms, locker areas and offices to accommodate three rotating shifts. A dayroom and covered patio with a grill allow firefighters to connect during downtime, supporting morale and team cohesion.
Located in a transitional area of a residential neighborhood and commercial properties, the design allows the building to integrate with the surrounding area through its site layout, building massing and materials.
