Curtiss-Wright, Manufacturing
Curtiss-Wright relocated its Steam and Air Solutions business unit to a new facility within the Charleston Trade Center in Summerville, South Carolina. Designed to support specialized manufacturing for the US Navy, the 134,000 SF facility balances high-performance production space with flexible infrastructure for future growth.
Built for Advanced Manufacturing and Testing
The building is constructed with a steel structure and precast concrete envelope. Designed to expand up to 174,000 SF, the facility can adapt to evolving operational needs.
Approximately 100,000 SF is dedicated to the manufacturing and testing of steam turbines. On the production floor, three crane bays provide coverage across the space with one 70-ton and two 20-ton bridge cranes.
A key feature of the facility is a below-grade testing pit measuring 70 feet long, 20 feet wide, and 15 feet deep. This space allows turbines to undergo pressure testing using steam generated by an on-site boiler, supporting critical quality and performance requirements.
The facility also accommodates large-scale milling equipment, requiring careful coordination between structural systems, equipment foundations, and underground utilities. This approach minimizes conflicts and ensures long-term operational efficiency.
Flexible utility distribution systems further support evolving manufacturing processes and allow equipment to be added or reconfigured with minimal disruption.
Workplace Designed for Performance and Support
The remaining 34,000 SF includes offices for engineering, project management, quality control, and technical support. Amenities include multiple break areas, a large cafeteria, training rooms, meeting spaces, locker rooms, and a fitness area. Together, these elements create a workplace that supports both operational efficiency and employee well-being.
