CaroMont Health, Pediatric Partners – Belmont
After more than 20 years in the same space, Pediatric Partners of Belmont sought a comprehensive design that incorporated medical planning, architecture, interiors, environmental graphics, furnishing specifications, and construction administration services. Our all-inclusive scope of work enabled us to provide a cohesive 10,000-square-foot upfit, aligning with the processes and procedures of their practice.
Operational flow dictated the spatial configuration and the creation of separate areas for sick and well patients, with staff and back-of-house functions servicing both groups. There are separate entrances from the main public elevators/corridor to the practice. In the waiting areas, a translucent privacy screen separates the sick and well sides of the waiting room with an enclosed reception desk spanning the two spaces. Separate sick- and well-draw stations and lab toilets divide patients while optimizing the lab staff and function.
On the well side of the clinic, there are two pods of three exam rooms for regularly scheduled well visits, a procedure room, and a mental health office for counseling services. A nurse navigator office supports new parents and infants as they begin their healthcare journey with lactation services, postpartum support, and referral services. On the sick-side, there are nine exam rooms centered around a large nurse and provider work area. Additionally, each sick- and well-care pod exits out to the public corridor to allow for check-out to occur in the patient room when needed and allow potentially sick patients to exit without going back through a waiting room or past additional staff and other patients.
Because the project was under construction during the pandemic, evolving clinical requirements shifted aspects of the design. To accommodate the shift from self check-in tablets to a more traditional staff-led check-in, we enclosed the check-in station with a frameless glass system and minimal opening so that paperwork could safely pass between patient and staff. To protect the staff from any aerosolized germs from potentially sick patients in the waiting area, the reception desk was designed with clean air flowing into the staff-only area via positive pressurization.
