CaroMont Health, Belmont Medical Pavilion

CaroMont Health commissioned McMillan Pazdan Smith to update their campus for a rapidly growing Belmont, NC community. The new expansion hospital campus also included a Medical Office Building (MOB) with an Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) designed to help meet the need for accessible healthcare. The building size was dictated partially by site constraints and a need for additional parking. While the initial design concept had 15,000 SF floor plates, changing from surface to decked parking allowed the team to grow the building footprint to 25,000 SF floor plates creating a 100,000 SF, 4-story MOB.

Our team sought to make the user experience more efficient and enjoyable for both patients and care team members while not compromising clinical space. First, we designed the 13,000 SF ASC — and then developed the core + shell which resulted in an efficient core that runs laterally rather than longitudinally. A phased  construction schedule was critical for all upfits which allowed the building to open as a whole and operations to be unaffected by construction. The interior was designed to evoke positive emotions for patients throughout the facility through soft accent color selection, warm wood textures, local nature artwork, and nature-inspired light fixtures.

Programming for the best staff and patient flow determined overall layout and adjacencies. Core and administrative services were streamlined with a shared waiting area, registration desk, break room, and check-out desk per floor. ASC flow was managed by creating a separate exit through a porte-cochère. Women’s Imaging was programmed on the ground floor to most easily serve multiple patient flows (imaging-only appointments, Women’s Center appointments, and standard imaging).

To maximize efficiency, universal exam room design was utilized to provide flexibility and allow shared space for Cardiology/Surgical clinics. Shell space on the third floor was created for future trends and/or potential growth.
