Gather GVL

Awarded: Commercial Construction & Renovation Project Profile Award Winner, 2021

McMillan Pazdan Smith was commissioned by private developer Four Oaks Property Group to form a collaborative team and design Gather GVL — a 12-restaurant, exterior food hall located on a vacant lot along Augusta Street. A prominent route adjacent to the central business district in Greenville, SC, Augusta Street is one of the most energetic and coveted spots in the downtown area. Gather is situated on 0.5 acres and is made up of both repurposed and newly fabricated shipping containers positioned around a courtyard to form a welcoming gathering space. The original vision was to create a refreshing, family-oriented place to reinforce the sense of community within the district. With vendors that range from local craft breweries to Mexican, Italian, or German cuisine, Gather GVL provides a well-rounded culinary selection in an inviting atmosphere where people can spend time with friends and family.

The site plan is centered on the gathering space bounded by the containers and open to the street through the main gate. Stackable containers are accessible on two levels and diners have a wide range of tables to choose from within a variety of upper and lower level seating areas. Comfort is enhanced by several seating options — long tables, high tops, a cozy fire pit and Adirondack Chairs — that encourage varied settings for social interaction. Some are covered while others are open to the sky. Gather also features a stage for local musicians and other forms of entertainment.
