Gaston County Public Health Facility Assessment + Renovation

Gaston County Public Health Facility, built in 1989, faces several challenges that make it uninviting and inefficient. Small offices, long corridors, poor wayfinding, and limited natural sunlight contribute to an uncomfortable environment for staff and visitors.

To address these issues, the design team developed concepts focused on creating a welcoming, easy-to-navigate space. Solutions include a new main entrance, brighter workspaces with enhanced natural lighting, consistent room layouts, and a central hallway connecting clinics.

The surrounding site will also be transformed to promote health and wellness. Plans include a pedestrian plaza, walking trails, and play and exercise equipment to encourage community engagement.

To guide these improvements, our team of planners and data analysts conducted a comprehensive facility assessment and programming study. They identified immediate functional upgrades and critical deferred maintenance and capital renewal priorities. Methods included demographic studies, clinic volume projections, site tours, and input from user groups and community stakeholders.

This process ensures that the Gaston County Public Health Facility renovation will meet the county’s current needs while paving the way for a more efficient and welcoming future for public health services.
