Wofford College, Mungo Student Center

The Wofford College Mungo Student Center has been an important part of campus life for decades. As student needs evolved, the center needed modernizing to meet their needs. To enhance the student experience, the design expanded dining areas, individual and group study spaces, and an improved game room. The renovation introduced integrated power and technology in the furniture and improved overall circulation, encouraging interaction among students. The renovation was completed in phases, so the center stayed open for daily use and minimized campus disruptions.

Mungo Student Center Needed a Student-Centered Process

Understanding the needs and preferences of the students — the primary users of the space — was imperative to the success of the project. The design team hosted focus groups and meetings, and conducted surveys with students, faculty, and staff to capture their feedback.

The student center, which is ideally located in the center of campus, is the campus’ living room. It should be a first-class facility for students to enjoy and relax when not in the classroom or residence halls.”

— Steven Mungo, a Wofford Trustee and 1981 Alumnus

Phase 1 transformed the former basketball gymnasium into a state-of-the-art fitness center. This renovation included weights, cardio equipment, intramural courts, a walking track, and new locker rooms. Phase 2 converted an art gallery into additional fitness space and a corridor improved connectivity between different areas of the fitness center.

The student center’s final phase renovated restrooms, main floor lobby, coffee bar, and dining area. This phase also updated the building’s overall aesthetic and functionality.
