University of South Carolina, Horizon I Research Facility

The 125,000 SF Horizon I Research Facility is a new, five-story structure that houses research laboratories and offices and supports engineering, technology, scientific research, and new energy solutions. The building is located in the research
district of campus, the “Innovista” and is designed for flexibility as well as confidentiality. After analyzing the space and utility needs of the potential tenants, SST Planners developed seven laboratory types to serve the building’s diverse users. Our team completed the programming and shell building in 2008; upfit laboratories were completed in 2010; and the three remaining floors were completed in 2014. The four floors of research laboratories are each 22,670 SF and include extensive gas piping and mechanical requirements with offices, conference rooms, and additional support spaces.
