U.S. Space & Rocket Center, Space Camp Operations
The U.S. Space & Rocket Center Space Camp Operations Center creates a memorable front door for space camp while bringing essential programs and daily operations into one central facility. Located in Huntsville, the 40,600 SF building welcomes campers with an environment designed to spark curiosity before their training even begins.
Supporting Every Stage of the Space Camp Experience
The facility needed to accommodate the excitement of arrival, the intensity of training, and the practical demands of operating one of the world’s best-known educational camp programs. A spacious lobby provides check-in stations, while 10 classrooms and a mission training room support learning experiences, including cyber threat-and-response simulations.
In addition, the building includes administrative support areas and a commercial kitchen. An auditorium is used for camp graduations, presentations, and public events. Operable walls allow the auditorium flexibility to be divided into two seminar spaces.
Turning NASA Data into Architecture
The operations center’s most memorable feature brings the surface of the Moon directly to the building. Working with Branch Technology, the design team transformed topographic data collected by the Lunar Orbiter Laser Altimeter aboard NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter into custom 3D-printed façade panels. The resulting 3,000 SF installation recreates the Moon’s craters and changing elevations with a level of detail that conventional construction methods could not easily achieve.
Inside the lobby, additional 3D-printed panels take a more abstract approach. Flowing forms inspired by the storms of Jupiter and the landscapes of Venus extend the sense of exploration from the exterior into the arrival experience.
On the exterior, metal panels and an exterior insulation and finish system complement the dimensional lunar façade. Also, the steel-framed structure and elevated composite concrete deck support the facility’s varied educational, administrative, and assembly spaces.
As a result, the Space Camp Operations Center expands the U.S. Space & Rocket Center’s capacity for classroom instruction, mission-based training, camper check-in, graduations, and public events. By combining aerospace data, digital fabrication, and flexible learning environments, the building advances Space Camp’s mission to inspire future scientists, engineers, inventors, and explorers.
