Tsali Care Center, Cherokee Indian Hospital Authority
The Tsali Care Center, located in Cherokee, North Carolina, represents a landmark investment in the future of senior care. Developed by the Cherokee Indian Hospital Authority (CIHA) in collaboration with the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI), this new $120 million, 135,000 SF facility addresses the critical need for quality long-term care and skilled nursing services for seniors in Western North Carolina.
A Design Rooted in Cherokee Values
The EBCI holds a deep respect for elders, viewing them as cultural keepers and teachers whose wisdom strengthens future generations. This tradition guided the design of the Tsali Care Center. Spaces were created to support storytelling, reflection, and community, honoring Cherokee values of family, connection to the land, and spiritual well-being. Courtyards and porches bring residents closer to nature, echoing the Cherokee belief in harmony between people and the natural world. A spiritual room offers a quiet retreat for prayer, meditation, or traditional practices.
A Home-Like Environment for Residents
The Tsali Care Center provides 120 private rooms across multiple specialized units, including skilled nursing, memory care, and assisted living. Each “household” is designed with shared dining and living spaces. This environment allows residents to feel comfortable, secure, and part of a close-knit group. Beyond the individual rooms, residents enjoy communal gathering spaces, activity areas, a bistro, and family visitation rooms that support socialization and cultural continuity.
A specialized dialysis unit provides direct access to care while reducing the need for stressful travel.
Supporting the Caregivers Who Support the Community
Recognizing the importance of staff retention, CIHA aims to be the employer of choice in the region. Spaces designed for the staff include centrally located but separate break areas and outdoor porches to relax and recharge. A dedicated training room and simulation lab allow caregivers to continue professional development, fostering a culture of learning and growth.
