Proterra, EV Battery System Manufacturing Plant
As demand for electric commercial vehicles grows, manufacturers are expanding production near key logistics and workforce hubs. This Upstate South Carolina facility enables Proterra EV Battery Manufacturing to scale domestic battery production while supporting electrified fleets across delivery, transit, and industrial sectors.
The project transforms a speculative industrial building into a high-performance manufacturing facility and headquarters, accelerating time to market. More than 200 jobs created by the facility further strengthen the Southeast’s role in the EV supply chain.
Flexible Manufacturing Designed for Emerging Technology
The manufacturing facility supports production of battery systems for a wide range of applications, including delivery trucks, buses, and industrial vehicles. Because EV technology continues to evolve, the building was designed to accommodate changing equipment, workflows, and production demands.
A central “spine” connects office and production areas, anchored by a shared core space where teams can interact. This layout improves communication between engineering, leadership, and manufacturing staff, an increasingly critical factor in high-tech production environments.
Design Features Support Talent, Innovation and Identity
The design prioritizes employee experience across both office and production environments. Modern workplace features include flexible office layouts, informal collaboration areas, and hoteling workstations. In the production area, enhanced amenities such as a dedicated employee lounge create a more comfortable and supportive environment for staff.
Daylighting strategies, including solar tubes, introduce natural light deeper into the facility, improving visibility and contributing to employee well-being.
As battery technology becomes a competitive differentiator, manufacturers are increasingly using their facilities to showcase innovation. This project includes a branded customer experience and showroom space where new technologies can be demonstrated to clients and partners.
