Porter-Gaud, an independent, college preparatory day school located in Charleston, SC, hired McMillan Pazdan Smith to provide master planning and schematic design for three specific project areas on their campus. Our team developed a planning process to encourage faculty and administrative input to determine the best use of administrative offices located around the campus and to address the need for a new middle school. One challenge includes the condition of existing buildings currently in use for the fine arts programs and auditorium. The study examined these programs and adjacencies to determine the best use of existing space, the potential location and programmatic composition of a new facility and plan for the cost and possible phasing required.

Our planning and design incorporated sustainable design practices and good fiscal stewardship with a focus on integration within the existing campus. Schematic designs and conceptual renderings supported the School’s fundraising initiative, and the plan was completed in 2016. (Our team also developed masterplanning services in 2020 for additional campus improvements).
