Novant Health, South Asheville Medical Plaza
To quickly expand care in the Asheville market, Novant Health partnered with McMillan Pazdan Smith and Vannoy Construction to transform a former Gold’s Gym into a modern, multi-specialty medical office building. The 38,500-square-foot South Asheville Medical Plaza provides a fast, flexible solution that meets regional demand while reflecting Novant’s design standards and mission to deliver remarkable patient experiences.
Working closely with Novant leadership, our design team developed a program organized around three key components: outpatient procedures, clinical / infusion services, and breast imaging. The design consolidates specialty clinics, imaging, and outpatient procedures under one roof — emphasizing efficiency, clarity, and comfort for patients and staff alike. A procedure suite features two procedure rooms, separate patient entrances and exits, and a shared pre/post-operative and PACU nurse station for streamlined operations. The breast imaging center supports both screening and diagnostics with distinct sub-wait areas and dual dressing rooms to reduce patient downtime. To enhance flexibility and accommodate future growth, clinical and infusion areas use standardized exam rooms and care team stations.
By reusing an existing structure, the team achieved significant schedule and cost advantages, allowing Novant Health to open new services quickly and sustainably. Every design decision aligned with Novant’s enterprise guidelines — enhancing experience, supporting efficiency, and maintaining a cohesive brand identity.
Designed for adaptability, it positions Novant to expand access and advance care throughout Western North Carolina.
