Novant Health, Forsyth Medical Center – Inpatient Med/Surg
This multi-phase transformation of Forsyth Medical Center, reimagined the general inpatient Med/Surg floor. The project focused on modernizing the environment while improving safety, functionality, and the overall patient experience — aligning with Novant Health’s long-standing connection to the community.
Spanning 20,000 square feet with 27 patient rooms, the renovation reconfigured the floor from top to bottom. A key advancement was the introduction of a comprehensive wayfinding strategy. Corridors were streamlined to support intuitive navigation, with clear signage integrated into the environment to reduce visual clutter and improve overall flow. Design elements throughout the unit reflect the local character of Winston-Salem, incorporating local imagery, light material palettes, and subtle textures to create a welcoming, community-connected atmosphere.
Despite working within the constraints of the existing structure, the design team rethought the spatial experience — overcoming previously low ceiling heights and tight room configurations. Patient rooms were expanded and updated to support evolving care models and new technologies. Each room now includes a dedicated family zone with a sleeper sofa, enabling loved ones to remain present and engaged in the healing process.
Safety and clinical performance were central to the sdesign approach. In addition to standard features such as conveniently located personal protective equipment storage, patient lifts, and decentralized staff work areas, the team introduced enhanced safety measures. These include designated in-room “safe zones” positioned at appropriate distances to reduce airborne exposure risk, as well as Updated patient safety signage was designed to clearly communicate critical information.
