Novant Health, Forsyth Medical Center, Critical Care Tower

In response to growing patient volumes and the need to modernize clinical environments, Novant Health completed a comprehensive inpatient expansion at Forsyth Medical Center, guided by a campus-wide master plan. McMillan Pazdan Smith, in association with Gresham Smith, provided integrated planning, architecture, and advisory services for the phased renovation of existing inpatient floors and the construction of a new critical care tower — all while maintaining continuous operations on an active hospital campus.

Strategic Expansion for Advanced Care Delivery

The new 193,480-SF critical care tower replaced an existing rehabilitation facility and expanded capacity through the strategic reallocation of 96 beds. This included the delivery of 60 critical care beds and 36 intermediate care beds, achieved through 3-to-2 room conversions and upgrades to intensive care and isolation capabilities. Patient rooms were enlarged to support higher-acuity care, accommodate modern medical equipment, and enhance privacy and flexibility. Upon completion of all phases, 25% of patient rooms across the campus were either new or upgraded with improved lighting, finishes, and noise-mitigating materials.

Phased Implementation Without Disruption

To ensure uninterrupted patient care, the new surgical suite was aligned with the existing operating rooms, enabling phased renovations within the active hospital. This approach created the necessary “open capacity” to take existing ORs offline without impacting operations. A consolidated sterile processing department, located directly beneath the surgical platform, improved workflow efficiency and strengthened surgical support services.

Designed for Performance and Future Growth

The expansion introduced enlarged, standardized operating rooms that enabled advanced procedures, including robotic-assisted surgery. Patient-centered design strategies — such as enhanced telemetry, acoustic control, and adaptable room configurations — supported a wide range of patient needs and acuity levels. The project also delivered critical infrastructure upgrades, including a new central energy plant, enhanced emergency power systems, and improved campus circulation. Together, these improvements positioned Forsyth Medical Center to support long-term growth, evolving care models, and increased operational efficiency.
