McMillan Pazdan Smith was commissioned as the Architect of Record for this new development for the Housing Authority of the City of Asheville through project owner / developer, Mountain Housing Opportunities. Our firm teamed with David Baker Architects to provide master planning and schematic design. The existing public housing neighborhood was re-envisioned as a mixed income community with a first phase of 212 units, approximately 242,000 SF, and a combination of multi-story apartment buildings, walk ups, and flats organized around courtyards and community green spaces. The masterplan was thoughtful to ensure the community would be a part of the fabric of downtown Asheville. As such, the existing site was lowered 10 feet and two entrances were developed. This in turn has made the community visible from town and offers fantastic views of downtown Asheville from even ground floor units.

MPS successfully ushered this project through the conditional zoning process. This involved community meetings and outreach, submission and review with planning and zoning staff, presentation and approval with commissions and finally City Council.

Phase 2 of the project will be 319 Biltmore which McMillan Pazdan Smith was recently chosen to design through another developer.
