L3Harris / Aerojet Rocketdyne, Advanced Manufacturing Facility

Aerospace and defense manufacturing demands highly controlled environments, specialized infrastructure, and the flexibility to adapt to rapidly changing technologies. When Aerojet Rocketdyne expanded in Huntsville, Alabama, the company needed a facility to support advanced propulsion manufacturing while accommodating large-scale equipment, precise environmental controls, and strict safety requirements.

Manufacturing Facility Designed with Infrastructure to Support Complex Aerospace Production

Located in Cummings Research Park, the 140,000 SF advanced manufacturing facility supports next-generation rocket propulsion manufacturing processes, including additive manufacturing, composite fabrication, and case winding. The building integrates long-span structural systems and extensive utility infrastructure to support complex production workflows and heavy industrial equipment.

Key features include a 100-foot clear span manufacturing bay with cranes and specialized foundations for large mills and presses. Overhead and underslab utility systems deliver nitrogen, compressed air, vacuum, dust collection, and DI water without interfering with crane operations. And strict humidity controls and process water systems support sensitive manufacturing processes, while measures were incorporated to reduce foreign object debris.

A separate reinforced concrete proof cell enables hydrostatic testing of rocket motor casings under extreme pressure. In the event of a test failure, the roof and doors will safely release pressure, protecting personnel and the facility.
