Fort Mill School District, Master Plan
As a commuter city in the Charlotte metropolitan area, Fort Mill School District faces unique challenges based on rapid enrollment growth within a geographically small district. To address the need for a new middle school, the district sought expert guidance in programming and planning to not only accommodate growth but also provide modern, flexible learning environments.

Planning for Growth in Fort Mill School District
McMillan Pazdan Smith worked closely with district staff to benchmark high-performing middle schools in the region. We also invited them on tours of similar schools to demonstrate best practices. Through surveys and community engagement, we synthesized stakeholder priorities into a strategic design approach. Capacity and utilization studies further supported the programming, ensuring the new middle school would meet both current and future needs.
The comprehensive programming and master planning efforts culminated in the successful inclusion of the new middle school in the 2024 bond referendum, which passed with strong community support. The school will serve 1,100 students, with expansion capacity for 1,400, making it the largest middle school in the district. Designed around grade-level houses with collaborative spaces, the school also includes a multi-purpose cafetorium, gym, and outdoor spaces. Early site planning for a future elementary school gives the district long-term flexibility.
