Denmark Library, Forsyth County Public Library

The Denmark Library is Forsyth County Public Library System’s fifth new branch since 2020. The county’s rapid population growth and rising demand for accessible public services drove the library’s design and construction.

Sustainable Library Design Blends with Site’s Natural Character

The Denmark Library’s design is deeply rooted in its pastoral setting. Located on a 9.5-acre site once used as a horse pasture, the library preserves the existing row of mature oak trees and follows the natural curvature of the hillside to integrate the building into the landscape. This approach minimizes the visual impact of parking areas, enhances views, and creates a calming, nature-connected experience for patrons.

With input from residents who were passionate about maintaining the site’s historic oak-lined drive and rural charm, the building was carefully nestled into the existing topography. The design uses an east-west orientation and daylight-optimized curtainwall shading to maximize energy efficiency, and the reflective roof is ready for future solar arrays.

Careful grading not only supported these sustainable strategies but also revealed opportunities to incorporate unique outdoor features.

Inclusive Spaces Support Learning and Connection

Inside, the library’s concave geometry and concentric floor plan layer spaces to draw the eye outward and blur the boundary between indoors and outdoors. Public spaces face active outdoor areas, while quieter, more private spaces align with the wooded entry drive. This creates a balance of openness and intimacy.

Denmark Library offers welcoming, age-specific areas for children, teens, and adults, along with flexible conference, meeting, and study rooms. Custom-built furniture and shelves add playful, interactive elements. In the children’s “Bookworm Garden,” is an art-inspired playhouse and “Wiggle” the worm. A zero-grade entry provides universal accessibility, and the flexible structure allows for future expansion as the community grows.

Outdoor Amenities Enrich the Experience

Outdoor features, including the hillside amphitheater, a story walk, and dedicated reading areas invite patrons to engage with the landscape. Courtyards and play areas encourage exploration beyond the walls of the building. An efficient stormwater management and ample parking support accessibility for all visitors.

By weaving together sustainable strategies, thoughtful grading, and a strong connection to its pastoral site, the Denmark Library delivers a flexible, inclusive, and nature-connected destination that will serve Forsyth County for years to come.
