Cone Health, Central Fill Pharmacy

As prescription volumes increased, Cone Health needed a more efficient way to manage medication distribution across its growing healthcare system. The organization envisioned a centralized facility that could consolidate pharmaceutical operations, reduce repetitive manual tasks, and support faster, more accurate service for more than 180 clinics.

Integrating Pharmacy Automation, Critical Systems, and Security

The 28,000 SF, central fill pharmacy integrates robotic filling systems with automated sorting, packaging, and distribution equipment. A carefully-planned workflow connects each stage of the process, helping pharmacy teams fill prescriptions efficiently while reducing the potential for human error.

Environmental controls, including humidity regulation, bright lighting, and durable epoxy flooring, create a clean setting for pharmaceutical handling. Backup generators and redundant data systems support continuous operations, while secure access points, cameras, and alarms protect medications and sensitive information.

The facility also supports the people behind its technology. Private and open offices, collaboration areas, meeting spaces, and employee amenities encourage communication and help staff work more effectively.

A Scalable Model for Medication Distribution

The completed facility serves as the hub for processing, packaging, and shipping medications to Cone Health clinics each day. Automated systems handle routine tasks, giving pharmacists more time for clinical responsibilities and patient care.

Designed to accommodate evolving robotics, artificial intelligence, and predictive technologies, the central fill pharmacy gives Cone Health a scalable platform for meeting future demand.

The project received a 2025 Triad Business Journal CRE Best Projects Award for its innovative use of robotic technology and contribution to community healthcare.
