Brunswick Library, Marshes of Glynn Libraries

The Brunswick Library has served Glynn County since 1975. To better meet the needs of today’s users, the facility underwent a complete interior renovation. The goal was not only to modernize the building, but also to preserve the region’s identity while preparing the library to adapt to the area’s changing needs. To minimize disruption, the library remained open throughout the renovation, so the community had access to resources while the space was transformed for the future.

A Library Design Rooted in Community History

The Brunswick Library renovation draws on the area’s port and industrial heritage, weaving local history into a modern civic space. A refreshed material palette reflects the textures of shipbuilding, maritime trade, and industrial craftsmanship, industries that have shaped the city’s culture and economy. These details create a warm, contemporary environment that celebrates community identity while welcoming new generations of users.

Modernized Interiors, Technology Upgrades and Flexible Meeting Spaces

Architectural features in the original Brunswick Library were preserved and highlighted like the exposed waffle slab structure. Lower shelving now brings natural light deeper into the interior to brighten the space. Additional updates include group study rooms, staff work areas, and a laptop bar to meet modern learning and collaboration needs.

The design team reconfigured the layout to create a 5,300-SF, 400-person meeting room, addressing the area’s need for gathering space. The room also divides easily for smaller events. Additional improvements include a relocated circulation desk, improved restrooms, catering kitchen, and an energy-efficient mechanical system.
