AnMed Health, Piedmont Free Standing Emergency Department (FSED) + MOB

Collaborative Design Process

As AnMed’s first freestanding emergency department (FSED), collaboration was essential. Our design team worked closely with stakeholders and user groups to understand operational needs. Answers to key questions — What is the process? What is the flow? — shaped the 54,000-square-foot building’s form and functionality. By actively listening, we delivered a facility that optimizes efficiency and provides critical adjacencies for both staff and patients.

Designing with Growth in Mind

The initial site master plan incorporated shell space for future medical office building (MOB) expansion. The design allows vertical or horizontal growth with minimal disruption to daily operations, while respecting today’s budget.

Technology Considerations

We added value by integrating technology thoughtfully. This includes digital check-in kiosks alongside a traditional desk and allocated space for telemedicine. Flexible areas were planned to accommodate evolving technology needs.

Elevating User Experience

Through AnMed’s engagement with user and patient advocacy groups, the facility reflects desired experiences at every touchpoint. Virtual reality studies further informed patient flow, creating a seamless journey through the building.

Other Key Features

Trauma rooms, fast-track triage, CT scan and radiology services, full lab services, a helipad, primary care + outpatient services, telehealth pods, onsite lab with diagnostic treatment, and PT/OT sapce.
