McMillan Pazdan Smith assembled a world class design team to lead the efforts for the University of South Carolina Upstate’s first building located outside their main campus. The new three story, 60,000 SF George Dean Johnson, Jr. College of Business and Economics is located within Spartanburg’s urban core, positioned to reinvigorate downtown urban development and give students direct access to the region’s central business community.
The design of the building focuses on experiential learning through the creation of real-world venues which include a state-of-the-art stock trading lab where students make real time stock trading calls based on momentum, news and overall current-day stock market action. Other amenities include fully equipped technology spaces, smart classrooms and lecture halls.
The highly detailed brick exterior, exemplified in its collegiate gothic styling, conveys an image of permanence and stability that creates a professional business atmosphere, helping students transition from campus life to the business world. By connecting students and professionals, the new facility attracts educational and partnership opportunities between the business community and the university.
