The Greenville County School District charged McMillan Pazdan Smith with designing a new 130,000 SF elementary school and center for gifted students that would bridge the gap between a struggling commercial corridor and the adjacent residential neighborhood by providing a new public space to unify the fragmented community.
McMillan Pazdan Smith crafted a public process where community stakeholders and citizens from the surrounding business district and residential neighborhoods voiced their vision and aspirations for the new facility. Ideas were offered for how the new school could improve the community’s sense of place, provide space for after school community events and improve the local economy.
Through McMillan Pazdan Smith’s leadership and creativity, the new state of the art school is a civic beacon and source of pride among the community. A consensus building design process reinvigorated family and community involvement, provided after-hour use of the gymnasium, cafeteria and media center for community events and encouraged safe and healthy lifestyles for the surrounding neighborhood children by promoting walking and biking to school.
