Chief Operating Officer

As the Chief Operating Officer, Chad directs the firm’s strategic initiatives with an emphasis on firm operations, project management, and technology. He focuses on business leadership, processes, and financial performance guiding the firm’s growth across the Southeast. Chad has served in numerous leadership roles in the design, construction and technology industries.

Joseph M. Pazdan, II, AIA

Managing Principal

Joe Pazdan, a Greenville, South Carolina native, is an enthusiastic community leader and advocate recognized for a hands-on approach and dedicated level of service. He is an avid member of the Urban Land Institute and is actively engaged in economic development and private investment initiatives across the Southeast.  For 30 years, Joe has overseen the planning and design of retail, hospitality, mixed use, office and industrial projects for the firm’s Corporate and Community Studios. He currently sits on ULI’s National Sustainable Development Council and has also served as Vice Chair for South Carolina’s District Council.

K.J. Jacobs, AIA, LEED AP

Principal

K.J.’s professional experience in a broad range of project types has resulted in a distinctive collaborative style. He works closely with both public and private sector clients throughout South Carolina and North Carolina, with a primary emphasis on developer-led projects. K.J. has overseen some of the firm’s most significant projects and continues to manage all office, retail, restaurant, adaptive re-use, hospitality and industrial manufacturing design work.

Karen oversees business development and marketing initiatives, identifying potential client needs and the appropriate strategic response to meet them. With over 20 years of experience, she has guided the successful geographic and market sector expansion of five studios and multiple office locations.

Ron G. Smith, AIA

Managing Principal

Ron Smith, a western North Carolina native, serves as a managing principal and directs the Spartanburg office with a focus on the needs of Community, K12 and Higher Education clients. He was the original founder of McMillan Smith & Partners, a predecessor of the current firm, and is an entrepreneur at heart. A former collegiate football player with NFL experience, Ron is an avid Sports and Recreation enthusiast and has worked on more than 60 college campuses in the Southeast. Ron has received numerous award and publication opportunities centered on planning and design of effective educational environments.

Ben Thompson, AIA, ALEP

Principal

Ben is deeply involved in the master planning, architectural design, and administration of all projects. His efforts focus on both large scale educational facilities and complex addition/ renovation projects. With each client, Ben leads the process from inception to completion, ensuring each project meets the individual needs of the client it serves. Ben is a recognized leader in educational facility design, planning, and management and believes in the power of design to accommodate today’s student in safe, secure environments. For all projects, Ben leads the process from start to finish by listening to client aspirations and developing solutions that integrate project vision use, and cost.

Principal

A registered architect for over 30 years, Dave is known for his technical expertise and passion for effective project planning and performance across the firm. With much of his background in healthcare design, Dave delivered facilities for a wide range of specialties, including imaging, cardiology, oncology, perioperative services, endoscopy, women’s services, inpatient, and central energies plants.

David has led numerous building programs, feasibility studies, and master plans for academic, public, and private institutions with an emphasis on identifying strategies to increase efficiency, functionality, and capacity. He is frequently a featured speaker at regional and national conferences on issues relating to library programming, design, construction, and sustainability.

A former national leader, Jim has a deep knowledge of architectural management best practices.

Her design approach is based on promoting connectivity and social interaction, respecting historic and cultural resources and valuing sustainable design. Lisa uses research and analysis to create well-informed designs that enhance the quality of the community.

He is a skilled designer with a distinctive ability to create and reinforce the client’s brand and culture through the built environment. As a firm principal, Cullen leads healthcare teams with a commanding knowledge of operational strategies for effective acute and non-acute spaces.

With hundreds of acute care renovation projects completed in his 18 years of practice, Aaron has a reputation for developing ways to deliver projects that seem complicated or even impossible. He is highly skilled in understanding client processes and needs, and in helping them navigate the best approach to implement them. Aaron’s strong relationships with Authorities Having Jurisdiction continue to prove vital to the quick resolution of clients’ regulatory issues.

As an architect and project manager in the Community Studio for over 14 years, Cary focuses on educational, non-profit, and cultural spaces. She oversees projects from schematic design through construction administration, and clients highly regard her strengths in communication and quality control. With a background in art and personal involvement in local theatre and arts education, Cary has a natural interest in the design of visual and performing arts spaces.

Paulette uses her 25 years of educational, municipal and recreational experience to bring a creative and responsible approach to public design. She focuses on encouraging new schools to meet their stated academic goals while also creating buildings that encourage, support and inspire the learning process. Beyond her work with OSE, OSF and state officials, Paulette strives to create sustainable solutions that add effective value to high performance buildings.

Overseeing projects from preliminary programming through construction administration, Michael is known for his unrelenting commitment to client service, consistently earning repeat business from the school districts he serves across a wide range of project types.

As Director of Senior Living, Stuart has served as designer and project architect on numerous institutional projects in the last decade, including schools, medical office buildings and environments for senior adults. His senior living experience includes short-term rehabilitation and wellness, skilled nursing, assisted living and independent living facilities. Stuart closely studies the impact of design in operational effectiveness and follows major industry trends.

With over 30 years of architectural and urban planning design experience, Bill’s background includes 17 years practicing in London and Berlin where his corporate, office design, commercial and industrial work received recognition in numerous design journals and monographs. Leading the firm’s Industrial segment from the Spartanburg office, Bill uses his fluency in German to work with international clients and has a reputation for clear design solutions, efficient project management, cross-cultural design expertise and precise coordination.
