Camperdown Academy is one of nine schools in the country certified as a training and teaching institution for assisting children with dyslexia and other reading related learning disabilities. To meet the rising need for instruction and teacher training in this specialized learning environment, Camperdown Academy has been functioning within an outdated and undersized facility since 1991. The new facility reorganizes their existing program into a cohesive plan where students, faculty, tutors, and volunteers can collaborate in an environment that is conducive to their highly-specialized method of learning. The new facility will also provide year-round, focused training for teachers within the community to better serve the needs of dyslexic children throughout the area.
Located on an almost 8-acre campus, the new Camperdown Academy is sited on the Verdae Development, a master-planned urban community in Greenville, SC that includes commercial, residential and community related uses. The 32,000 SF, $5 million facility includes classrooms, library, eating and gathering areas, numerous individual tutor rooms and a full size Gymnasium that integrates with a Music, Art and Drama space to create an Auditorium use.
McMillan Pazdan Smith also provided assistance in creating materials to assist with the school’s capital campaign currently underway for 100% of the cost of the project. The design of this project was undertaken as a design-build project delivery with Harper Construction of Greenville, SC.
