Stadium Journey, a sports-focused platform geared at creating ultimate sporting experiences by sharing awe-inspiring stadiums, recently spotlighted Wofford College’s Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium. The 123,000 square foot facility, designed by McMillan Pazdan Smith, features a 3,400-seat basketball arena and a 500-seat volleyball competition venue. Combining the amenities of state-of-the-art arenas with the traditional feel and details of basketball’s cathedrals — the Palestras and Hinkles and Maples Breslins – the new stadium seeks to preserve and capture the history and tradition of the game while addressing the present and future state of the sport.
“The Wofford Terriers have the best home court advantage in the Southern Conference thanks to the opening of the Richardson Indoor Stadium. Its close to the court seating, state of the art electronic graphics package and luxury seating far exceeds what you would expect from a school in one of the smaller conferences. “

Ranked on a scale of 1-5 (5 being an A+!), the stadium was scored in the categories of food and beverage, atmosphere, neighborhood, fans, access, return on investment, and extras. The building nabbed perfect 5’s in the areas of atmosphere, return on investment, and extras, and achieved high marks in the other categories. “A spectacular exterior matched with premium interiors including state-of-the-art acoustics, electronics, furnishings, and graphics,” helped to earn the stadium a cumulative score of 4.29.
The scale, design, and relationship to the campus context was a significant consideration throughout the design process. Reiterated by the experts at Stadium Journey, the project team was able to successfully deliver a building that is beautiful, functional, and well-integrated into the campus.
In addition to the men’s basketball, women’s basketball, and volleyball teams, the venue also serves as an additional event space for non-athletic functions, accommodating up to 4,500 guests.
